Google Ads vs Facebook Ads: Which Is Right for a Small Business?

Mariam Garcia7 min read

Google Ads capture demand from people already searching for what you offer, while Facebook and Instagram ads create demand by showing your offer to people who match your audience but are not searching yet. Urgent services usually start with Google; visual or considered purchases often do well on Meta.

I have spent three years building and optimizing Meta ad campaigns and running Google Ads alongside them. The question I get most from small businesses is which one to use. The answer depends less on the platforms and more on how your customers decide to buy.

The core difference: intent vs interruption

On Google, the customer tells you what they want. They type "emergency plumber near me" or "bookkeeper for small business" and your ad appears in answer. You are meeting demand that already exists.

On Facebook and Instagram, nobody is searching. You are showing an ad to people who match an audience, in the middle of their feed. You are creating demand, or reminding people of a need they have not acted on yet.

When Google Ads usually fits better

  • Urgent needs: repairs, emergencies, anything people search for when something breaks.
  • Services people already know they need and actively compare, such as accountants, lawyers and many trades.
  • Businesses with a clear local service area where "near me" searches are common.
  • When you want leads that are ready to act now and can handle a higher cost per click.

For some service categories, Google also offers Local Services Ads, which appear above regular search ads and charge per lead rather than per click. It is worth checking whether your category and area qualify.

When Facebook and Instagram ads usually fit better

  • Visual results: renovations, landscaping, beauty, food, events. Before-and-after photos and short videos do the selling.
  • Offers people do not search for but respond to when they see them: a free workshop, a webinar, a seasonal promotion.
  • Building awareness in a local area before people need you.
  • Retargeting people who visited your site but did not act.
  • Events, where you need to reach a specific local audience by a date.

The mistakes that waste budget on each

Google Ads

  • Broad keywords that attract job seekers, do-it-yourselfers and people outside your area.
  • Not adding negative keywords, such as "free," "jobs" or "salary."
  • Sending clicks to a homepage instead of a page that matches the search.
  • Not tracking calls, so the campaign looks like it produces nothing.

Facebook and Instagram ads

  • Lead forms that are too easy, which bring in people who barely remember submitting.
  • Leads left sitting inside Meta instead of flowing straight into your CRM with an instant reply.
  • Stock images. Real photos of your work and your team almost always perform better.
  • Judging campaigns on cost per lead alone instead of cost per booked appointment.

How to test without wasting money

  1. Set up conversion tracking first: form submissions, calls and bookings, in Google Analytics 4 and in each ad platform.
  2. Pick one platform based on the questions above, and one offer.
  3. Build a landing page that matches the ad.
  4. Connect leads to your CRM with an instant reply, so slow follow-up does not ruin the test.
  5. Run it long enough to get meaningful data, then compare cost per booked appointment, not just cost per lead.
  6. Add the second platform once the first is working, often starting with retargeting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Ads or Facebook Ads cheaper?

Facebook often has a lower cost per click, but Google clicks usually come with stronger intent. Compare the cost per booked appointment or per customer, not the cost per click.

Should a small business run both?

Eventually, often yes. Start with the one that fits how your customers buy, get tracking and follow-up working, then add the other.

Do Facebook lead ads work for service businesses?

They can, when leads flow into a CRM instantly and get a fast reply. Leads that wait hours or days lose most of their value.
